About JB Applied

Making things work better
has always been the job.

I’m James Braybrook, founder of JB Applied. My career has moved through workflow analysis, websites, automation, business intelligence, data strategy and senior leadership—but the underlying job has stayed remarkably consistent.

Hello, I’m James

I start by understanding how the business really works.

Then I look for where processes, technology, information or the customer experience are getting in the way—and build something better.

That might mean shaping a proposition and brand, creating a new website, improving an established one, connecting systems, removing repetitive work or making data easier to use.

01 / MELBOURNE

Workflow improvement came first.

My career properly began as a Workflow Analyst at Stellar Asia Pacific.

I worked close to the people doing the job—understanding requirements, improving systems and reporting, and helping build practical tools including bespoke campaign software, a customer-lifecycle dashboard and automated reporting.

One change reduced a major reporting workload by around 80%. The lesson was not simply that automation works; it was that the right improvement starts with understanding the work properly.

Then the same thinking met an owner-led business.

When I returned to the UK in 2014, I applied that approach inside Braybrooks.

The work crossed processes, reporting, marketing and the website—improving how customers understood the offer while reducing administration behind the scenes. In 2020, I rebuilt the website around a clearer customer experience, and it has continued to evolve as the business has changed.

That experience still shapes JB Applied: a website is not a separate marketing object. It is part of how the business communicates, sells and operates.

From workflow to leadership

The tools changed. The purpose didn’t.

From there, my career moved deeper into business intelligence, reporting, automation, data strategy, warehouses and models, commercial insight and team leadership.

Today, I lead Finance Data and Analytics within a major UK retail group. The scale is different, but the work still comes back to the same questions: what are we trying to achieve, what is getting in the way, and what would make the result clearer and more useful?

Why JB Applied

Technology only becomes valuable when it is applied to a real business problem.

JB Applied brings together the different strands of my experience—websites, workflows, automation, data and commercial thinking—and makes them directly available to owner-led businesses.

It isn’t about introducing technology for its own sake or making simple things sound complicated. It’s about understanding what would make the business work better and then building the right solution.

JB Applied is deliberately personal. You work directly with me from the first conversation through to delivery and whatever comes next.

Working principles

01

Useful before impressive

The work needs to earn its place in the day-to-day, not just look good in a presentation.

02

Questions before answers

A useful solution starts with understanding how the business really works, not arriving with a preferred tool.

03

Clear and practical

Complexity may exist behind the scenes, but it should not be handed to the people using the result.

04

Built to improve

Websites, systems and reporting should be able to evolve as the business changes.

Start with the problem

If something in your business feels harder than it should, I’ll probably want to understand why.
